The Covane community lodge project was awarded by tender to H&L through the Ministry of Tourism, the World Bank and the Ford Foundation. The project’s aim was to benefit the local community of the Cunyane tribe after being relocated from their homes to make way for the construction of the Massingir dam.

The project involved upgrades to site infrastructure and the construction of a restaurant, chalets, ablution block and several service buildings. H&L broke ground in January 2012 and completed the project in September of the same year. Most of the materials were procured from South Africa and had to be transported 800km by truck.

To ensure maximum benefits to the local community, H&L sourced the majority of the labour force from within the local community.
